What is needed to train a dog for sheepwork?
PATIENCE : NO TIME : NO
INFORMATION : YES! YES!
Where do you get information?
By making contact with handlers who have already walked the path.
Where do you find these?
By joining SASDA and joining the Network of handlers who offer their time and give advice freely to help others achieve their goals. You need to develop a skill the same as anything new you learn to do in life. Like having to learn loading information onto the website. You have a book, some notes, but have no one to sit with you and talk you through the steps. To say the least, you flounder.
You may meet up with someone who trains dogs but you still don't come to grips with the person's methods or can't even get going with your dog. Don't give up you will find someone who thinks like you. The basic method of training remains the same but there are different ways to tackle the job.
With information and guidance there is no one that is not capable of training a dog to the standard for good farm work.
